The Denver Urban Debate League invites all middle school students in the Denver Metro Area to participate in a competitive debate event called My City Council Debates.
This event will take place from 12:30-4:30pm. Lunch and training will be provided. No experience or preparation is necessary and there is no cost to attend. Students must be accompanied by a school chaperone or parent chaperone. Students must register in advance. Upon completion of registration more information and details will be provided. Students must attend the competition with either a school or parent chaperone.
Congressional Debate is an exciting debate format in which students debate in chambers of 5-30 students and discuss the pros and cons of legislation they write themselves just like they are members of the City Council, House of Representatives, or US Congress. Congressional debate teaches students Research, persuasive speaking, active listening, critical thinking, parliamentary procedure, and accurate and extensive note taking, and cross examination skills. It is suitable for experienced speech and debate students as well as students with no prior experience in debate. Participation in congressional debate helps increases students' academic achievement and cultivates important leadership skills.
